Double Helix released a one minute Japanese trailer for upcoming Capcom classic revival Strider, slated for release next year to Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4. This is basically a one minute CG montage.
The trailer starts off with Strider-Hiryu gliding his way down some snowcapped mountains from a distance, briefly cutting to some glimpses at the classic side-scrolling gameplay in action. Another shot shows Strider clinging to a wall and looking towards a brightly lit cityscape.
We then cut again to a closeup look of Strider on his glider, bobbing and weaving to avoid explosives lobbed at him in mid-air. Finally, he lands and starts to make his way, left-to-right.
One brief shot brings to light the game’s 2.5D gameplay, as he is shown leaping and approaching an opponent in a straight line, in three quarters view. It seems like some parts of the game will move the camera back to this view, although we have yet to learn if this will be pure cinematic or will also be part gameplay. The remaining 40 seconds show off classic Strider gameplay.
This Strider HD remake was originally announced at SDCC’s World of Capcom panel. In a reverse of the usual situation, Double Helix is working with Capcom in Osaka to make sure that the game will meet Japanese gamer expectations.
This new Strider game will apparently also have a new Metroidvania-like exploration system, which may or may not improve the core experience. The game’s original creator Kouichi “Isuke” Yotsui revealed that he has no involvement with the game and will pray for Capcom USA.
Double Helix certainly snagged some high profile titles at the dawn of next gen. We’ll see if they do this game justice.
