In a press release today, Games Workshop, makers of the Space Hulk boardgames based on the world of Warhammer 40,000, announced a new video game set in their universe, called Space Hulk:Deathwing.
You play as a Deathwing Terminator,a member of the elite 1st Company Dark Angels Space Marines Chapter. You are lost in a Space Hulk, a mangled set of starship debris drifting across the Warp. The Warp itself is an immaterial dimension filled with other ship wrecks, asteroids, and other debris. While this debris is often home to lost and invaluable ancient technologies, it also serves home to infestations of the Genestealers, a host of aliens that are a blight to humanity.
Your Deathwing unit is also a Librarian, and so will be able to learn the abilities of the Psykers, as well as raise your skills using Fervor Points across 4 skill trees.
As you can tell from the description above, Warhammer 40,000 has more than its fill of lore to differentiate Deathwing from the competition. The description so far does make it sound like it could be a Borderlands/Metroidvania type of game, although we will have to wait and see how much more sci-fi, or maybe even fantasy, elements they bring over from the source.
Space Hulk Deathwing is being developed by Streum On Studio, to be published by Focus Home Interactive and Cyanide Studio. We don’t have a release date or platforms announced yet, but given Space Hulk’s 20 year history in gaming, I would be surprised if this didn’t hype you up one bit.
