Apparently, people really want to see a spiritual successor to the classic Mega Man franchise. Keiji Inafune, the veteran game designer who’s worked on projects like Onimusha, Resident Evil, and Mega Man, has decided to join Kickstarter in an attempt to fund a new Japanese side-scrolling action game that harkens back to 8- and 16-bit titles. It would take most developers weeks to gather the requested $900,000 to make the project, dubbed Mighty No. 9, but the Comcept team has managed to see its first campaign funded in just over two days.
Inafune’s track record likely gave the game the quick start, but it’s also obvious that people want some life injected into the franchises they loved as kids. Mighty No. 9 is about as close to a Mega Man game without using the actual branding, but if you’re interested in a more complete description of the game, take a look at how developer Comcept describes it on the Kickstarter page.
“You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk,” the page reads. “Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through six stages (or more, via stretch goals) you can tackle in any order you choose, using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet!”
With 29 full days left until the campaign ends, expect Mighty No. 9 to travel well beyond its initial asking price and possibly become even larger than the team first anticipated.
