On a Facebook post today, Project Soul announced that Spawn and Heihachi Mishima would be get to compete against each other in the universal version of Soul Calibur II HD Online.
Possibly one of the last fighting game franchises that boasted a broad appeal, at least prior to the genre’s recent renaissance, Soul Calibur II was the first game in the Soul series to go fully multiplatform. The game boasted a new original character, Necrid, designed by comic book creator Todd Macfarlane, and Namco saw it fit to give each console their own exclusive character. Spawn was for the Xbox, Heihachi Mishima was for the Playstation 2, and Link was for the Gamecube. Soul Calibur II HD Online represents the first time Heihachi and Spawn can face each other in the same game.
This decision brings to mind the events of Soul Calibur IV, which also had console exclusive characters Darth Vader on the Playstation 3 and Yoda on the Xbox 360. Fans clamored to get each character on their version of the game. Namco revealed that both characters were ‘DLC’, only for hackers to discover they were both already in the disc and were only to be unlocked.
In Twitter and Facebook, fans are asking about a Wii U port and the inclusion of Link into the roster. Project Soul continues to make no comments about the matter.
For what its worth, the HD uprezz looks exactly like you would expect: smoothed out, but in no way as detailed as current generation Soul Calibur. The game will be releasing Autumn 2013. You can check out some more screenshots below
