Sony revealed on their blog the release of a new game from Arrowhead Studios: Helldivers, a futuristic coop top twin stick shooter, coming for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita.
The trailer introduces the science fiction scenario, as human armies in space drop down on alien environments to destroy giant bugs. Yes, this is the premise to Starship Troopers.
On their blog post, however, Arrowhead explains the premise is a little more original than it appears. In Arrowhead’s words, all of humanity is now under a ‘managed democracy.’ As members of the elite ‘Helldivers’ unit, your aim is to save humanity by eliminating all of their enemies, and that’s as far as Arrowhead will reveal. There will also be other alien races to fight, so expect xenomorph and yautja stand ins, I guess?
Gameplay appears to be straightforward. You have a top-down view of the field, and get to move around, as well as aim your guns, 180 degrees. It’s probably a safe bet that controls are mapped on the analog sticks a la Robotron.
Now, the more interesting elements of the game are the interactivity between the different consoles. Helldivers offers Cross Save, meaning you can play the game using any of the three consoles and your save data can carry over across them. Like Monster Hunter 3 for Wii U and 3DS, Helldivers will also offer local play between Playstation 4 and Vita, so that two players can play on the Playstation 4, and two more can join in using their Vitas. Sony has not provided smaller details on this local play, such as whether the Vita players will need to have their own copy of the game, or if the two Playstation 4 players can keep separate saves, or move saves over between consoles.
The game also has yet to get a release date, but we’ll keep you up to date.
