Road to Battlefield 4 talks about Field Upgrades

August 16, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

DICE also details more multiplayer-related changes.

DICE is pushing forward with their Road to Battlefield 4 blog series, this time talking about Field Upgrades, as well as some info on suppressing fire, squad mobility and the available squads and kits.

DICE shared images of the Chinese, Russian and American squads you can choose from. Each kit has also received minor tweaks. Assault gets more mobility, thanks to a First Aid pack they can apply immediately to help a teammate and get back to the action. Recon receives a revamped Sniper Rifle. Support gets more offensive options, like XM25s, carbines and DMRs. The Engineer gets a wider range of weapons to choose from, so that he can choose either hard to control, but high damage weapons, to fire-and-forget smart weapons that are markedly less effective.

Aside from Aid Kits, Ammo Packs and Laser Designators have also been made portable. The latter acts as your SOFLAM while you are in transit, with the flip side being that it isn't able to auto-designate targets. Ammo Boxes and Med Kits remain stationary, so you will still have to plan carefully.

Suppressing fire is a contentious factor in Battlefield, and so it has received drastic community mandated changes. Support gets powerful Light Machine Gun suppressive fire, and subsequently everyone else's suppressive fire abilities have been brought down a notch. Suppression is also deemphasized at close range for better close quarters combat. There will also be a scope sway effect that skilled players should be able to overcome.

Finally, regarding the Field Upgrades. Each Field Upgrade career has four levels, which you can track down thanks to the Field Upgrade Progress Bar. There are universal and kit-based upgrade careers, with their own skill trees. Each kit can choose as many as four upgrade careers. All four can choose either Offense or Defense paths. The skill tree for Offense goes Sprint, Ammo, More Grenades, and Reduced Fall. For Defense, they get Armor, Cover, Flak, and Quick Regen.

In between rounds, you can always choose to switch paths, and you will retain whatever upgrades you already attained. DICE has increased the number of specializations available from 7 to 25, so that you can play around with different specializations and roles. DICE ends this post by asking fans what custom career paths they would like to be added. Jump on over to the link if you'd like to share your feedback.
