Hideo Kojima, the famed developer behind the massively popular Metal Gear franchise, always has a trick or two up his sleeve. You can almost guarantee that the fourth wall will be broken at least once throughout one of his games, with other sprinkles of insanity meticulously placed elsewhere. For Metal Gear Solid 5, Kojima has a new surprise in store for fans, and one that he thankfully won’t even get close to spoiling before release.
"Specifically for the next-gen and Metal Gear Solid 5, it's not necessarily about breaking the fourth wall, but we do have a big surprise for the players in this game," Kojima told CVG in a recent interview. "We have challenged and pushed ourselves with something that movies can't do but only games can do. It hasn't been done before.”
If you follow Kojima on Twitter, you’ll soon learn that he’s a big fan of cinema. For him to believe that what he’s doing can’t be done elsewhere is exciting, but it sounds as if it won’t involve the new Kinect for Xbox One.
"I'm very interested in that stuff whether it be the facial expression readings or something else," he continued. "But we're having a hard time with that and we're not sure if we'll be able to implement something for MGS 5. But we're still looking at it and are really interested in the new Kinect."
The characters have evolved quite a bit throughout this series, and according to his recent quotes, it sounds like Kojima has, too.
