Assassin’s Creed series has an ending

August 5, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Game director Ashraf Ismail explains how each iteration is planned in parallel.

Does it seem to you like the Assassin's Creed story just keeps going forever? Ubisoft has recently shared assurances with Eurogamer that there actually is an ending in sight for the franchise's story, if not a set date for it.

Game director Ashraf Ismail explains that the company has an Assassin's Creed brand team that oversees everything, while each developer team works on each iteration of the series.

To get a better idea of how this works, you can think of how George Lucas used to manage all the different Star Wars projects. Although stories can vary widely and even contradict each other, there is a core storyline, as well as themes and elements, that define each project as a Star Wars project.

For Assassin's Creed, production on each iteration has been ongoing in parallel. The advantage of this arrangement is that it allows each team to keep recurring elements consistent across each sequel. Of course, they've also managed to keep the franchise's lore more tightly knit together, and only recently explored going outside gaming with a new comic book series set in India.

Ismail explains that although the series' producers have a general idea how Desmond Miles' odyssey through time and struggles against the Templars has an end in sight, they've given themselves enough flexibility to keep adding new elements and settings.

Assassin's Creed V, of course, is already in production, with Ubisoft Toronto, headed by Jade Raymond, among one of the chief development teams. While some may say the series has already worn out its welcome, you know Ubisoft will keep it going as long as demand is high enough.
