Animal Crossing: New Leaf Hits 5 Million Worldwide Sales, Luigi’s Mansion Passes 2.5 Million

July 31, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

The 3DS continues to lead the charge for Nintendo.

It was revealed earlier today that it’s the 3DS, and not the Wii U, leading Nintendo’s hardware sector. Although the 3D-enabled handheld had a pretty slow start thanks to a steep asking price of $250, a price cut and surge of quality software has helped push the console to new heights. If you’re wondering what games are helping the 3DS sell so many units across the globe, you should look no further than the ever-popular Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

If you follow just about anyone who even knows what video games are on Twitter, you’ve probably seen the sea of posts related to this addictive title. During last month’s North American launch, Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold more than 500,000 copies on the 3DS. That might seem like a significant number, but it’s really nothing when compared to the fresh figures Nintendo has provided in its latest financial report today. As of June 30, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has managed to sell 1.19 million copies outsideof Japan, bringing the grand total to 5.4 million copies worldwide. This includes both retail and digital sales.

New Leaf isn’t the only portable title worth discussion. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, the sequel to the GameCube launch title, has pushed 2.65 million copies worldwide. Like Animal Crossing, this includes both retail and digital figures. As previously stated, the Wii U isn’t exactly succeeding at this time, but these two 3DS games have done strong figures right when Nintendo needs them.
