A little over a month after pulling out, Precursor has announced they are relaunching their Kickstarter campaign. Come July 25, the once-troubled crowdfund has a chance to start over again, and this time, their prospects may be better.
Precursor has done something very smart in the month they've had no active crowdfunding; they have kept in contact with the fans and pledgers. In fact, this is quite the understatement: Precursor has grown an active forum for pledgers, an official online magazine, two podcasts, and even launched an art contest!
In prior updates, Precursor did set expectations on what they planned to do for the Kickstarter relaunch. As promised, they have ramped up engagement with their community, and in fact much of the content mentioned above is community driven. They will also provide weekly updates on their progress, both through their Kickstarter and their private forums. Finally, they're using what they've learned so far to retool their campaign from scratch.
Of course, all this engagement means they had to assign a Social Manager, and they have assigned Phil Haymes to this task. Between the forums, Facebook and upcoming Kickstarter, Precursor has several avenues of communication to keep their campaign transparent and open.
I must say, Precursor has done an admirable job the past month, and whereas I was skeptical when their project was initially announced, everything they've done since closing their Kickstarter shows their commitment to the project is real. The pending relaunch is definitely going to be a good sign for crowdfunding in general – the recent controversy with Tim Schafer may have unfairly cast doubts on game developers who've decided to take this avenue for funding. The fans are definitely interested in giving Denis Dyack and the rest of the team a chance to prove their worth, and I think they will sincerely go for it.
