At a special event for the UK games media yesterday, Fergal Gara, head of Sony Computer Entertainment UK & Ireland, said Sony believe the PS4 to be "the most poweful gaming device ever conceived and certainly ever developed."
In a techradar interview Gara commented, "The thing I'm most pleased about is the entire design principles about the PS4 are being focused around the gamer first. So how we creat a platform that's great to develop for and easy to develop for, because that unleashes the creatives and if they can create the best experiences that's going to lead to satisfaction for gamers."
Gara added that it's very difficult to deliver both an affordable price and good performance but that he thinks Sony has struck the right balance.
"It's great to be going to market with what we believe is the most powerful gaming device ever conceived and certainly ever developed and at a price that feels very aceptable, certainly based on the pre-order volumes that we're seeing."
Pointing to the PS4's 8GB of super-fast GDDR5 memory Gara said it gives developers working on the console a key advantage over the Xbox One.
"We have the most uncompromised memory spec that we could pretty well dream up and if you talk to developers, if you talk to first party, third party developers, you'll see that that opens up the possibilities for them and it's about as high spec as they could have ever imagined, 8GB gives them huge freedom to continue developing fantastic games."
Concluding the interview Gara also strongly hinted that there will be some significant announcements concerning PS4 made at gamescom with a strong hint that gamers will learn of the console's release date then. gamescom is set for August 21st to 25th and Sony usually have some major reveals for their press conference.
The PS4 is set to be released later this year for $399/€399 and £349. The Xbox One will be released in November for $499/€499 and £429.
