Killer Instinct Coming to Xbox One

June 10, 2013 by David Nguyen

Not developed by Rare, but by Double Helix Games

After much speculation, Rare’s Killer Instinct is making its return on the Xbox One. A short trailer was shown during Microsoft’s E3 presentation, featuring some updated versions of familiar characters.

Last month, Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer teased that “Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we’re going to show at E3.” He also mentioned a “historic IP”. Some might argue how historic Killer Instinct really is, but with fighting games being bigger and more mainstream than ever before, you can’t blame them for wanting a slice of the pie. The game isn't being developed by rare, but by Double Helix Games.

The characters have gotten much needed updates, and the fighting engine looks as fast paced as ever.. A demo match was shown later in the Microsoft presentation featuring the updated Jago and Sabrewulf. I’m looking forward to seeing how this game will be received in the fighting game community. Console exclusive games rarely get huge amounts of tournament play, and considering Xbox One’s 24-hour online check, I have doubts that tournament organizers would want to bother.

In 2012, Microsoft had applied for a renewal of the Killer Instinct trademark, but was denied by Fox Television Studios. Fox Television Studios had produced a short-lived television series under the same name. Earlier this year, it was reported that the two companies had come to an agreement to share the trademark.
