Frontiers, which Kotaku is calling “Elder Scrolls at a leisurely pace”, is an exploration/survival game inspired by the creator's experience playing games like Daggerfall. According to the trailer, the player will be able to explore massive regions with unique climates and hundreds of structures, in first-person mode. The game will feature mysteries to explore, adventures to undertake, and NPCs to talk to. There will also be creatures to fight off, but the game will have more of a focus on exploration and less than is typical in these kinds of games on combat.
Creator Lars Simkins is technically a VFX artist, but he wants to take some time off doing that kind of work to develop the game. So he's turned to Indiegogo in an attempt to raise the $80,000 he thinks he'll need in order to take that time off and hire some additional staff to really polish Frontiers. He wants to get some artists to improve the game world, pay a “talented writer” to contribute the lore, enable Steve Barnes to create more music along the lines of that which features in the trailer, and do other things like provide Oculus Rift support and potentially add multiplayer.
Simkins wants to get the game launched by January 2014, though says to “take that with a grain of salt”. However, to stand a chance he needs to hit his funding target. With 29 days to go, he's already raised nearly $5,000. And perks like the ability to write a book that will appear in the game or to get your face in the game will surely convince some people to pledge.
Does an Elder Scrolls-style game with less combat sound like the kind of thing you'd want to play?
