Double Fine Takes To Kickstarter Once Again, For Massive Chalice

May 30, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

Will lightning strike twice?

History was made last year when Double Fine managed to raise over a million dollars in just 24 hours via Kickstarter, for a proposed adventure game that was simply called Double Fine Adventure at the time (which would eventually be titled Broken Age).

It eventually raised a little over three million dollars, but the most important part is how it demonstrated to game makers what a valuable tool the crowd sourced funding platform can be, and essentially began a revolution of sorts, one that is still going strong.

So, a little over a year later, they're taking to Kickstarter for a second time, this time for something called Massive Chalice. Which they describe as the love child of turn-based tactics and feudal fantasy, one that covers a dynasty that stretches across an entire century:

"We're inspired by classic tactical strategy games like X-COM, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Emblem, as well as Game of Thrones’ array of noble families. With these influences in mind we’re creating an epic, replayable turn-based tactics game where you train generations of heroes to repel a demonic invasion.

And with Kickstarter, we can do it. We have a great concept and team ready to go, and we want to work closely with our community to control the future of MASSIVE CHALICE free from outside interference."

The Kickstarter has plenty of additional details, like how it's single player turn-based tactics game, one that spans multiple generations, for maximum replayability. It also evokes roguelikes, so content is randomized, and death is permanent.

Much like with Broken Age, there are plenty of cool incentives for donating to the project, and Double Fine promises to have a clear and consistent dialogue with backers throughout the project.

Given the success, and legacy, of the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter, the studio has a lot to live up to. And if this was anyone else, there would be serious doubt in regards to this particular project's outcome. So there's a very good chance that it will fare well… but there is by no means any guantee either.
