A new trailer called “Universe Origins” tells the backstory of EVE Online. According to the video description, the trailer “marks a decade of EVE Online, as well as depicting the origin thematics of the EVE Universe that connects the MMO with Dust 514”, but the dramatic video is worth watching for its own sake and not just viewed as marketing material. Got a spare four minutes? Sit back and enjoy.
The story starts with Earth, already at a stage beyond where we are in the real world. In the beginning of this tale, humans are already colonising other planets. Then, they discover “the EVE gate”, a wormhole that allows ships to pass through to a “remote corner” of the universe. For a century, they colonise hundreds of planets. And then, the wormhole collapses.
Of course, what happens next is catastrophic. Colonies die, the groups of survivors forget Earth and are even too far apart to stay in touch with each other. Eventually, after thousands of years, four different groups rise up, having rediscovered spaceflight, and – inevitably – there is mass conflict. Technology allows for immortal humans, whose consciousness is passed between clones. These humans are the playable characters in EVE Online and its companion console game DUST 514, and the video shows us both sides of things with the accompanying line:
“In the sky, we reach farther. On the ground, we strike harder.”
How do you feel about EVE Online after seeing this trailer? Does it make you want to play it, or if you already have, to venture back?
