Fans of the classic old school, beat 'em up known as River City Ransom, take note: a sequel is finally happening. It's hard to believe that one hasn't happened yet, right?
Actually, there was supposed to be a River City Random 2, for WiiWare and other platforms last year. But its developer, Miracle Kidz, retried the project for whatever reason.
Anyhow, it's finally happening, according to Combit Studios, described by ComputerAndVideGames as a Canadian based indie developer.
Somehow, a tiny Western development house managed to get its hands on a fairly well know Eastern IP. Combit has apparently brokered a deal with Million, a company that formed from the ashes of Technos, which was the original developer and publisher of River City Ransom.
The closest they ever got to a sequel was River City Ransom EX for the Game Boy Advance, which is actually a remake of the original.
Combit states that the sequel will be due in August of 2014, initially for the PC though other platforms are a possibility. Though they're need some help getting it done, which is why they plan on launching a crow-funding campaign later this summer.
The news was broken on the Combit blog:
"With strong followings in North America and Japan, we will work closely with Million to ensure it is the best game it can be for fans on both continents. We are certainly not the only ones with an abiding love for River City Ransom, and we’ve assembled an amazing team of some of the most ardent fans of the game, each bringing their unique talents and imagination to what we hope will be the follow-up game you’ve always wanted to play."
It was also mentioned how the upcoming game will not be called River City Random 2. No real reason was cited, though if one had to guess, perhaps Miracle Kidz still has the rights to that name, even though they abandoned the project some time ago.
