Vanillaware’s Dragon’s Crown hasn’t exactly been the easiest game to find media on. Even a single screen of this gorgeous 2D action game hitting the internet is enough reason to get up and cheer, but thanks to publisher Sega, a new gameplay trailer for the playable Dwarf character has been released to satisfy the hungry fans.
If you’re unfamiliar with Vanillaware, you’re not alone. This Japanese development studio has been crafting beautiful, slick action titles since 2007, but the team’s unique visual flair has rarely translated to sales numbers. Both Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Odin Sphere are still stunning to look at, and at times even more fun to play, but these are games that are meant to satisfy a small audience.
Even if that may not change too drastically with Dragon’s Crown, there is a certain history that Vanillaware and Sega will be latching on to with this PlayStation 3 and Vita title. This fantasy game has been branded as the spiritual successor of Princess Crown, which is a popular Sega Saturn game released back in 1997. A large portion of Vanillaware is composed of former Princess Crown developers, so it’s safe to say that a few old-school gamers are looking forward to the continuation of a classic.
Dragon’s Crown will retail for $49.99 on the PlayStation 3 and $39.99 on the PlayStation Vita, and while players will be able to swap saves between the two devices, there will be no Cross-Play support. A solid date is not available at this time, but expect to see this stylish adventure during the summer.
