The fact that the Nintendo Wii U has so few available games is one of the biggest problems with the platform. The issue is widely discussed, and everyone agrees that the Wii U could stand to have more games on it—especially from third-parties.
Nintendo is certainly aware of the problem, and intends to remedy the perception of its shortcomings with the announcement that they are working with third-party partners to roll out a number of new games for the Wii U.
"Disney, Ubisoft and our other third-party partners have a great lineup of exclusive games and unique experiences for fans of all ages," said Steve Singer, Nintendo of America’s vice president of Licensing. "Their creativity spans every audience and genre, creating new ways to play that can only be experienced on Nintendo platforms."
Disney will be bringing Disney's Planes, a flying adventure game inspired by the upcoming animated film, exclusively to Nintendo platforms. The game will be out on the Wii U as well as the Wii, 3DS and DS on August 6, just three days prior to the film's launch in theaters on August 9.
The company will also be bringing Disney Infinity to the Wii U, Wii and 3DS on August 18. The game's basically Disney's take on Activision's wildly popular Skylanders games, allowing players to place real-world toy versions of Disney characters on a platform to import them into the game.
Besides Disney, Ubisoft has confirmed that Splinter Cell: Blacklist will be making its way to the Wii U on August 20. We wrote about the game's unique features for the platform a few days ago.
Additionally, Ubisoft will bring Rayman Legends to the Wii U, beginning with a new demo and a full online challenge mode. The game, which was originally intended for release earlier this year, is no longer exclusive to the Wii U. The delay has however allowed its developers to integrate 30 new levels into the game, justifying the extended period of development.
“Wii U gives both games a second-screen experience that fans will enjoy,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing, Ubisoft. “The genres are different, yet both games share fun game play and replayability.”
Other games being trotted out by Ubisoft include Injustice: Gods Among Us, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, Resident Evil Revelations, Fast & Furious: Showdown, Sniper Elite V2, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Titles bound for the Nintendo eShop on the Wii U include Ducktales Remastered, Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, Mutant Mudds Deluxe, Spin the Bottle, and Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails.
