Lab Zero Releases Clips of Skullgirls DLC Character Prototypes

April 2, 2013 by David Nguyen

To help in the voting process, a few clips showing off unique character game mechanics have been released by Lab Zero Games.

Lab Zero Games have released a few videos on their YouTube channel as prototypes for their potential Skullgirls DLC characters. As prototypes without art assets, the characters are represented by already-existing characters, but it gets the idea across. Lab Zero Games is certainly trying to make each character as unique as possible, making the vote for only two of them a difficult one. Here’s a few of the characters..

Feng may look like a cross between Guilty Gear’s Jam and Scott Pilgrim’s Knives Chau, but her bird mechanic reminds me of Bang from BlazBlue. She has the ability to leave her two bird companions somewhere on the stage and use them to change her momentum. In this prototype, the grey bird pulls her towards it when she punches, and the red bird pushes her away when she kicks.

Eliza has a very interesting mechanic, where damaging her gives her more options. She has the ability to manipulate her blood, and can use it to damage opponents. Her character bio page reads that she may have the ability to “anchor herself onto the Staff of Ra” to active a second mode. I wonder how gruesome this character might get…

Scythana’s design seems to pay tribute to Street Fighter’s blonde bad-boy Cody, but she fights with a more feral twist. She will be able to stretch her already lengthy limbs to extend her reach (think Dhalsim of Street Fighter). Scythana will also have the ability to grab fallen opponents and teammates and use them as weapons. A bit insensitive of her, but it’s certainly a unique fighting game mechanic!
