No more AutoRun for Windows Vista and Windows XP

February 9, 2011 by Eric Swain

The latest patch turns off the AutoRun feature for Vista and XP.

Well if your sticking with the Windows Vista or XP software you might have noticed your AutoRun feature turned off from the latest patch. Along with several security updates released on the patch Microsoft decided to pull the plug on AutoRun in hopes to prevent disguised malware from autuomatically loading the AutoRun menu when a USB device is attached. You may remember AutoRun was once called AutoPlay and became really a convenience for users to have devices and programs automatically install from a CD, DVD and a USB stick once inserted. However malware was a big problem that came along.

This is a great way to cut down on malware attacks but unfortunately affects legit programs stored on USB storage devices. With this update you still will have the AutoRun menu pop up when a USB storage device is inserted, however you will no longer be able to run the program from the device. So is this a good move or just a inconvenience?
