Ubisoft has revealed that at the touch of a button, Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher will use a pair of night-vision goggles that he is known for using. The character’s iconic item that allows him to see in the dark and appears on the cover of the majority of the Splinter Cell games will appear in this video game and will work.
The goggles will be worn over his eyes.
These night-vision goggles, when turned on, will make a sound that they have made in other games, then areas that had previously been without light will be coloured green instead and you (the player) (and Sam Fisher himself, presumably within the fiction, although he is just a video game avatar and thus moves as an extension of your knowledge so he does not, in fact, possess any senses) will be able to see.
Here’s a video that shows the equipment in action. It’s about a minute long. You don’t have to wear goggles yourself in order to view it (that might actually break them or hurt you. I’m not sure how these things work in relation to viewing light sources).
This sounds like a joke that this would even be brought up, but if you’ll recall, in the previous game night-vision goggles we’re used at all. You used an entirely different piece of equipment that served a similar functional purpose. Instead he was using “sonar” goggles. This removal of equipment was supposed to be indicative that the series had transitioned to a more realistic point when he was scrambling for any equipment he could find, having been disavowed by the agency.
So, no, cool, this is actually good info. Thanks Ubisoft!
