EA Offically Aquires Respawn

December 6, 2017 by Jordan Coetsee

The deal was concluded December 1st.

Last month EA announced that it would be purchasing Titanfall developer Respawn. The publisher/studio stated at the time that the deal would be finalized by end of the calendar year. Now it seems like the purchase has been confirmed,  A filing with the Securities & Exchange commission dated December 4 confirms that the deal was completed on December 1.

EA said in a press release that the deal is worth $455 million, a number that includes cash, equity, and performance milestone payments. This news comes after EA managed to outbid the Titanfall mobile game publisher, Nexon.

Respawn was founded in 2010 by former Call of Duty designers Jason West and Vince Zampella. When the first Titanfall was announced fans of the FPS genre were excited to have something a little bit different than everything else during that time – and this was it. A title which linked both NPC players and real-player together in short, fast-paced matches were exactly what gamers were looking for (not to mention the giant friggin’ mechs which you call down after reaching a certain amount of points.) Titanfall 2 released last year but unfortunately didn’t perform as well as the studio had hoped, this is likely due to its release window coinciding with both Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1. Nevertheless, the title has pushed on keeping its player base through continuous free updates.

Titanfall 2 is out now for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
