CheckPoint Uses Video Games to Confront Mental Health Issues

November 27, 2017 by Katrina Filippidis

New initiative GamerMates lets you connect with like-minded folks in a positive environment.

Based in Australia and New Zealand, non-profit organisation CheckPoint aims to foster a positive relationship between video games and mental health. It’s run by professionals from both the games and mental health industries, who together strive for the recognition and utilisation of games as therapeutic tools to assist with recovery from things like anxiety, depression, and burnout.

In addition to revamping its website for better accessibility, CheckPoint will also be rolling out a new community program called GamerMates. Just like friends you play with online on Steam, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and Nintendo Switch Online, GamerMates allows you to find like-minded folks and play your favourite games together within a pro-mental health space.

CheckPoint also seeks to reduce the stigma often associated with mental health issues by offering players an environment where they can open up and discuss various issues freely, without fear of judgement.

Those who are interested in getting involved with CheckPoint can register today. It’s free, and you can also unlock a self-care guide and thinking hack pack at no extra cost. Access to GamerMates begins at the $15 per month tier.
