Two days before Sony's “See the Future” event – i.e. PlayStation Meeting 2013, where we are very likely to get our first glimpse of (or at least hear confirmation of) the PlayStation 4 – the company has uploaded a third “PlayStation Evolution” video. We've seen videos that invoke nostalgia for the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2, and now we get one for the PlayStation 3.
This video differs from the the other two because the PlayStation 3 is still on the market. So while we get description in the past tense – “PlayStation 3 featured a state-of-the-art blu-ray player” etc. – we're also shown plenty of games that haven't even come out yet rather than encouraged to feel nostalgic as in the other videos.
We also get a section on Move, and if Sony is still producing consoles when it's time for a PlayStation 5 and they do another of these recap videos I doubt they'll focus quite so much on that part. It's clear that despite gearing up for the launch of the PS4, Sony is still intent on fans seeing the PS3 as current rather than historical.
Strangely, while these videos are available on the PlayStation Meeting 2013 site in both the EU and the US, the content differs slightly for the two regions. If you've only got time for one set, make it the US versions, because for some reason our ones here in the EU don't have a voiceover, only subtitles, and the voiceover man gets entertainingly dramatic.
Has this look back at the history of PlayStation got you more ready for the PS4? Or has it highlighted for you that PlayStation is past its glory days?
