Sony's internal studio known as Sony Santa Monica has yet to make a game outside the God of War universe. Although the studio is known to help other studios who are developing games for Sony platforms, the studio itself has not worked on a game without the God of War name since they began.
So, why is that the case, then? In an interview with Shacknews, Sony Santa Monica studio director Shannon Studstill admits that the franchise's success is one of the reasons why they haven't moved on, and adds that they're not done with Kratos' tale yet.
There are creative reasons and business reasons…I think there was still some story to tell.
However, Studstill has admitted that the studio has explored the possibility of a new game that wasn't set in the God of War universe. She even lets out that there were even "prototypes" developed "very early," though not "in this development cycle."
While we have no idea what sort of ending the studio has for God of War: Ascension, seeing as it is a prequel and we know how God of War 3 has ended, it's safe to say that Ascension won't be our last God of War game, no?
Would you want Sony Santa Monica to work on other projects aside from the God of War series? Maybe create a new IP from scratch? I wouldn't say no to that, I admit.
God of War: Ascension is set to hit in March 2013 exclusively for the PS3.
