If there's one thing that Mortal Kombat: Legacy has demonstrated, it's how an effectively and well produced web series can tremendously enhance the associated game's value and image.
Which might be part of the reasoning behind the just announced collaboration between Crytek, developers of the upcoming Crysis 3, and celebrated filmmaker Albert Hughes. Who alongside his brother Allen, has directed such films as Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, and The Book of Eli.
The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 is an upcoming video series that will not only provide background for the game itself but also highlight the technology that drives it all forward. In a press release, Hughes states:
"When EA and Crytek approached me about being involved in creating ‘The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3’ video series, I liked the idea of creating emotional stories using only computer generated images… The challenge of producing something intensely human without ever seeing a human on screen was incredibly compelling, and the technology of the CryENGINE that Crytek developed enabled me to do that and venture into a completely unique medium of storytelling."
Cevat Yerli, Chief Executive Officer of Crytek, also had this to add:
"The goal with ‘The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3’ video series is to reveal the incredible world we have been building for Crysis 3 and to let CryENGINE take center stage to highlight the power of our state-of-the-art game engine… We’ve worked closely with Albert on this project and think that the 7 Wonders series will show the leaps and bounds that Crysis 3 is making over its predecessors."
The popularity of Machinima, which is the art of creating a movie with video game technology, continues to grow at a rapid pace, and Hughes is yet another established Hollywood filmmaker to embrace this bold new medium.
