For those old enough to remember SEGA as a hardware-maker instead of being a shadow of its former self as they are today, one of its key titles back then was "Bare Knuckle," or more commonly known in the U.S. as Streets of Rage. It was your standard beat-'em-up that was all the rage back then but it had amazing graphics (at the time) and its combat was more varied, too.
Sadly, SEGA has not touched the franchise again except as a downloadable classic on the PSN and XBLA. While the chances of the franchise getting rebooted is quite far off, we might have the next best thing — footage from its cancelled remake!
Courtesy of Sean Noonan, a former developer at Ruffian Games where the remake was being made before it got canned, we get to see a few seconds' worth of "HD" Streets of Rage gameplay.
I suggest watching the footage now before it gets pulled by SEGA or some other corporate goon.
Noonan confirmed his involvement by tweeting, "So it seems like one of my previous projects has leaked, as pretty as I remember," and the video was attached to his tweet. Supposedly, the Streets of Rage remake was set as a downloadable game on the PSN and XBLA.
I don't know about you, but the game looks fantastic. Of course, seeing as it was canned, there is the chance that the gameplay itself was not up to snuff…either that or it was canned due to SEGA's financial hardships.
Do you remember Streets of Rage? If so, would you want a remake done or should SEGA let us have our fond memories of it? Also, based from the footage, would you buy that game on PSN or XBLA?
