What sold more on the first than the theatrical release of the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2? What sold more than the biggest movie of 2012, The Avengers? You guessed it: Halo 4. Halo 4 was the costliest game Microsoft ever made, but it looks like it paid off. Literally. The game is on track to reach $300 million in global sales in the first week alone, having earned more than $220 million worldwide.
Kinda makes you wonder if a Halo movie would also do well at the box office, doesn’t it?
Either way, lifetime sales for the franchise are now beyond $3.38 billion, an incredible feat. Microsoft is certainly happy about it.
“We’re thrilled that Halo 4 has emerged as the biggest U.S. entertainment launch of the year,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios. “Thanks to the millions of fans worldwide who helped make this another record-breaking launch for the Halo franchise, Halo 4 is kicking off a strong holiday season and has become the must-have blockbuster experience of the year.”
