Using the ever popular crowdfunding, Wing Commander developer Chris Roberts has achieved more than half of the goal for a "space epic" sandbox game with "deep lore". They achieved a great deal of it on their website Robert Space Industries dot com with at least 11,000 pledgers. Due to urging, the developer also set up a kickstarter today which has achieved 56,000 of its 500,000 goal in a few hours. While the website says there are 22 days left, Kickstarter says 31 and it's definitely looking like they will reach their goal.
Earlier today, Roberts talked to PC gamer about how consoles are holding PC development back. When things are multiplatform, it is true that PC is often limited and Roberts believes that is why PC hardware is no longer being pushed.
"Because I’m not worrying about current day consoles, there’s a level of detail I can do that wouldn’t otherwise be possible,” he said. “Just the memory it would take to store these textures – you just don’t have that on the consoles." He believes that the PC gamers exist, but that the games do not. But it's evident by Star Citizen that he has a point, as his website proclaims "Let's put high-end PC gaming and Space Sims back on the map!"
Star Citizen has an expected release date of 2014. You can donate thru the site or Kickstarter.
