Blizzard Officially Drops Battle.net Name

March 24, 2017 by Dennis Patrick

So long Battle.net!

It’s been stated in the past that Blizzard would be getting rid of their former Battle.net branding, something that has been with the company for decades. The decision came last year when Blizzard alerted its fans that over the years, gamers were starting to confuse Battle.net and Blizzard as not a singular unit.

While services slowly lost the branding and instead was given a Blizzard front such as Blizzard Voice and Blizzard Streaming, it’s only now that the company has done away with Battle.net application name.

If you enjoyed any of Blizzard’s video game titles on the PC platform, you would be familiar with the application. This was a central hub that allowed consumers to download Blizzard video games, updates, and along with access to news feeds for their favorite Blizzard titles.

Today, the application is simply known as the Blizzard app. Nothing has been changed so you should have the same interface and access as the previously branded Battle.net app. Now that the company is under one name as a whole, this should avoid any future confusion with new gamers along with further showcasing the Blizzard name.

Again, Blizzard made the announcement last year in a blog post in which their reasoning behind the changes was stated.

“When we created Battle.net, the idea of including a tailored online-gaming service together with your game was more of a novel concept, so we put a lot of focus on explaining what the service was and how it worked, including giving it a distinct name.

Over time, though, we’ve seen that there’s been occasional confusion and inefficiencies related to having two separate identities under which everything falls—Blizzard and Battle.net. Given that built-in multiplayer support is a well-understood concept and more of a normal expectation these days, there isn’t as much of a need to maintain a separate identity for what is essentially our networking technology.”
