The developers at Gearbox are finally unleashing the multiplayer madness of Battleborn onto an unsuspecting world, and if you’ve been following this latest arena combat shooter, you already know it has a huge list of characters to contend with. Unfortunately, only seven out of those original twenty-five heroes are available right from the start. The other eighteen need to be unlocked, and there’s more than one way to do it.
There are two types of XP you can earn in Battleborn — Command and Hero. Command XP is the type that matters here, because every two Command Ranks you’ll unlock a hero. That can be a pretty arduous process, so if you’re looking to unlock your favorite hero and don’t want to reach Command Rank 40 to play as Ghalt, check out the alternate challenge requirements for every character below.

Heroes Unlock Guide

There are two ways to unlock characters in Battleborn; earning a certain Command Rank, or completing a Challenge. Theses are independent requirements — you only need to complete one.
If you want to earn characters early, go for the Challenge Unlock options listed below.
Story Missions – Unlockable Heroes
These heroes are very easy to unlock. Complete story episodes to unlock, or join friends to earn Silver ratings and complete the same missions on Advanced difficulty.
Boldur
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 26.
- Alternate Challenge: Complete “The Experiment” Story Episode.
Caldarius
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 28.
- Alternate Challenge: Complete “The Renegade” Story Episode.
ISIC
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 30.
- Alternate Challenge: Complete “The Algorithm” Story Episode.
Mellka
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 34.
- Alternate Challenge: Complete “The Heliophage” Story Episode.
Kleese
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 36.
- Alternate Challenge: Earn a Silver rating on all Story missions.
Deande
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 38.
- Alternate Challenge: Complete “The Heliophage” Story Episode on Advanced.
Ghalt
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 40.
- Alternate Challenge: Earn a Silver rating on all Story missions on Advanced.
Faction Victories – Unlockable Heroes
If you focus on a single faction, these heroes can be unlocked very early.
Benedict
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 10.
- Alternate Challenge: Win 5 matches playing as any Peacekeeper faction character.
Ambra
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 14.
- Alternate Challenge: Win 5 matches playing as any Jennerit faction character.
Kelvin
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 18.
- Alternate Challenge: Win 5 matches playing as any Eldrid faction character.
El Dragon
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 20.
- Alternate Challenge: Win 5 matches playing as any LLC faction character.
Toby
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 24.
- Alternate Challenge: Win 5 matches playing as any Rogue faction character.
Kills / Victories / Assists – Unlockable Heroes

- Alternate Challenge: Complete 5 co-op missions or matches with at least one player.
Reyna
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 8.
- Alternate Challenge: Get 50 kill assists in Versus matches.
Galilea
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 12.
- Alternate Challenge: Kill 800 minions of any type.
Whiskey Foxtrot
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 16.
- Alternate Challenge: Win 15 matches.
Phoebe
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 22.
- Alternate Challenge: Kill 50 enemy players.
Attikus
- Command Rank: Unlocks at Command Rank 32.
- Alternate Challenge: Kill 800 Jennerit faction enemies.
