The Sphinx isn’t done yet in Dragon’s Dogma 2. After solving the five riddles at the Mountain Shrine, the Sphinx will fly to a new location called the Frontier Shrine. There are five more riddles to solve — and these are easily the toughest riddles yet. Some of these riddles require tricks you might not even know you can do. To help you beat the Sphinx and claim all of her reward chests, we’ve got solutions for every single challenge.
And there’s one last chest to unlock. Solving the riddles seemingly ends with an anticlimax. The Sphinx simply leaves, and the gold chest remains locked forever. If you want to open the giant gold chest and get the powerful item inside, you’ll need to solve one final riddle.
Riddle of Reunion
After completing the first five riddles of the Sphinx at the Mountain Shrine, the Sphinx will fly away. You’ll need to find its new location to solve the first riddle.
- Solution: Locate the Frontier Shrine. From the Checkpoint Rest Town, go down to the stream under the bridge. Follow this path northwest until you reach an area that’s heavily fogged. This area may spawn a Minotaur and a Chimera.
- From this foggy area, go left and smash the boulder blocking the fallen pillar. Follow this new path to reach the Sphinx.
Reward: 100,000 G
Riddle of Contest
Unlike the first area, the five riddles here much be completed in order. After solving one riddle, the next will begin immediately. None of the riddles are timed, but you’ll want to place a Portcrystal at the Frontier Shrine soon.
For this riddle, you’ll automatically equip a ring that makes you incredibly weak — and an enemy will spawn. To solve the riddle, you must defeat your opponent.
- Solution: While you can kill your opponent with regular attacks, the easiest way is to knock them down by throwing a boulder. After they’re knocked over, pick up the body and throw them off the side of the cliff.
Reward: Ring of Ambition – The wearer earns more XP from defeating foes.
Riddle of Futility
An absolutely cruel riddle. The Sphinx summons a large vase. You’ll need to take it to an NPC in Bakbattahl without breaking it. There are two ways to solve this puzzle — the hard way and the easy way.
- Solution [HARD]: Pick up the vase and carry it to Bakbattahl. The vase cannot ride in Oxcarts and can be broken by your own Pawns. You’ll need to slowly progress, put down the vase, defeat enemies, then collect it again. This can take an hour or more.
- Solution [EASY]: Instead of taking the vase to Bakbattahl, take the NPC to the vase. Go to Bakbattahl and find the researcher at the giant Sphinx mural near the player house. Pick him up and use a Portcrystal and Ferrystone to teleport to the Frontier Shrine. You can fast-travel while carrying an NPC.
Reward: Eternal Bond – A ring that instantly boosts your bond when given as a gift.
Riddle of Recollection
One of the easiest riddles yet. Very simple. The Sphinx asks how many riddles you’ve solved so far. This can change depending on if you’ve failed them. You can tell by how many chests have been opened. A failed riddle won’t have an open chest.
- Solution: Move the statues onto the raised platform. Move 8 statues if you’ve solved every riddle so far. If you’ve failed any, change your answer by placing fewer statues near the Sphinx.
Reward: Unmaking Arrow – Unique arrow that kills enemies in a single hit.
Riddle of Differentiation
An incredibly difficult puzzle — unless you know where to look. The Sphinx will show you a person briefly. Take a screenshot. The Sphinx wants you to bring this person back to her. This NPC could be anywhere in the world. And there’s a dirty trick to this puzzle.
- Solution: The person you need to find is always located in Checkpoint Rest Town. The NPC can be one of two characters — Dante or Vergil. The two NPCs look almost exactly the same. Take note of the part in the hair. One has a part on the left, the other has a part on the right.
- Location #1: Checkpoint Rest Town – During the day, the NPC will stand in the second-floor inn — the one above the tavern. This is on the Vermund side of the gate.
- Location #2: Checkpoint Rest Town – On the Battahl side of the gate, look for an-almost identical NPC. He will stand in the inn / vocation guild during the day.
The Sphinx will want one of these two characters. Look at both carefully — you can get a much better look in the History menu where you can check all the NPCs you’ve met so far.
- NOTE: Save your game before showing the Sphinx your answer.
To bring the NPC to the Sphinx, grab them and use a Ferrystone — make sure to plant a Portcrystal at the Frontier Shrine. If you brought the correct NPC, you’ll earn another reward.
Reward: Whimsical Daydream Censer – Attacks with this Trickster weapon generates gold.
Unlocking The Giant Gold Chest
The Sphinx will fly away after completing the last riddle. She also leaves the giant gold chest behind. Reload your game if she got away. You must complete one final step to get the gold chest key.
- Gold Chest Key: To get the giant chest key, you must defeat the Sphinx. Attacking her at any time will initiate a boss battle.
- To get the key, you must NOT ATTACK HER FRONT. Attack her hind legs and avoid her human chest / head. Try to do as little damage to the front of her as possible.
- If you deal too much damage to the front of her, she’ll leave mid-fight and never return.
This battle can be initiated at any time, but you can only open every chest if you wait until after unlocking the fifth chest in the Frontier Shrine. After that, attack her before she flies away. Then you can defeat her in battle, get the key and open the giant gold chest.
- Giant Gold Chest Reward: Eternal Wakestone – A unique wakestone you can use to revive multiple NPCs.
This is an incredible reward for players that want to finish everything in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and accidentally off a few NPCs. Now you can revive everyone at the Charnel House or the Morgue — or go on a killing spree without all that guilt.
