Destiny 2 Lightfall has added all kinds of new activities for players to interact with, and whilst most of them are fairly difficult, they are all fun and rewarding. Terminal Overloads are brand-spanking new Public Events that crop up in Neomuna and can be accessed simply by going to the correct location or using your Map to matchmake into an event in progress from anywhere in the Sol System.

Terminal Overloads are an escalating series of challenges that force players to work against the clock to complete objectives. These range from killing specific targets, to holding ground, and even fighting giant bosses. They are hectic in the best way, and the rewards for completing them are quite good. Players will likely notice a mysterious second chest that spawns every time you complete a Terminal Overload – one you cannot open. This guide covers how you crack them open.

What Are Terminal Overload Chests?

Terminal Overload Chests are the real reward for completing a Terminal Overload event. These drop incredibly hard-to-find Strand weapons, and if you want to make the most of your Lightfall experience, getting your hands on these weapons is going to be a priority. Not only that, but you can upgrade these chests by levelling up your Reputation with Nimbus. This will guarantee a Terminal Overload weapon – which is very nice.

The catch is that these chests are locked, and you aren’t going to be able to crack them open for several hours. As a result, we recommend avoiding this event entirely – for now.

How To Get Terminal Overload Keys

Terminal Overload keys are a nightmare to get a hold of. Firstly, you need to complete the Lightfall campaign in its entirety. This will take 3-5 hours – more if you are playing on Legendary for your first run. These keys will not drop until you have done this, so don’t try and grind them out in advance.

After that, you will need to complete the ‘Welcome To The Hall Of Heroes’ quest, which is rather short. This will then lead seamlessly into Stargazer, which is the quest you want to focus on. Follow the instructions and you will be on your way to getting Terminal Overload Keys.

Once you have completed Stargazer, you are ready to get grinding. We say grinding because Terminal Overload Keys don’t drop very often. You can do the following to maybe get one:

  • Combat Patrols
  • Public Events
  • Opening Chests

These all have to be done on Neomuna, and the chances of getting a key are very low. It took us about 30 minutes of non-stop Patrols, Public Events and Chests to get one. On the plus side, this will also grant your Strand Meditations and Reputation with Nimbus, hitting several birds with one stone.

You can also take on a unique Bounty with Nimbus that will always give you a Terminal Overload Key as a reward, and this requires you to open Chests at the end of a Terminal Overload event. This is time-consuming as you will need to complete three events to complete the bounty, but the reward is a Key. It’s worth the time.

Finally, Terminal Overload Keys can drop from standard chests that spawn at the end of a Terminal Overload. These are also very rare, so don’t rely on them.

Rewards For Opening Terminal Overload Chests

We’ve already mentioned that Terminal Overload Chests drop powerful Strand Weapons, and these seem to change daily. The pool of weapons is not fully known as of writing, however, the two Strand Weapons we have discovered are:

  • Synchronic Roulette
  • Circular Logic

Both of these weapons are very good, with Circular Logic, in particular, being excellent due to it being a rare instance of a Strand Heavy Weapon. Both of these weapons can roll the incredibly powerful Hatchling Perk, which creates Threadlings on Precision kills. These weapons seem to be integral to many Strand builds, and hunting them down is very much worth your time.

That’s all we have for Destiny 2 Lightfall for now. Be sure to check out our other Guides, Lists, and Walkthroughs for more Destiny 2 content.
