Genshin Impact: How to Ascend Yelan

February 20, 2023 by Maddy Cohen

Find out what materials you need to fully ascend Yelan. She is a welcome addition to any reaction-reliant team!

Table of Contents[Hide][Show]
  • Regional Specialty: Starconch
  • Common Boss: Ruin Serpent
  • Gemstone: Varunada Lazurite
  • Common Drop: Insignia Series
  • Materials by Ascension

Yelan was first introduced last May with Genshin Impact Version 2.7. Unlike Tartaglia, Yelan is a true Hydro Bow character – she won’t convert her Bow attacks to Hydro swords.

It may take a few trial runs with Yelan to get a grasp of her playstyle, but once you do that, she’s a really fun character to use. Her Elemental Skill animation is one of the most visually interesting without being overwhelming, and extremely useful for applying Hydro to multiple enemies.

Yelan uses some of the most accessible Ascension materials, except for the Runic Fang. At least the Ruin Serpent has a direct Waypoint, unlike the Pyro Regisvine and the Primo Geovishap. However, in order to access the Ruin Serpent, you need to complete the Chasm Spelunkers World Quest.

Regional Specialty: Starconch

The Starconch is a Liyue Specialty and can be found along the region’s shores. On the mainland, you can find the Starconch scattered throughout the beaches of Yaoguang Shoal. Since this area borders Dragonspine, you’ll find some Starconch there as well. One NPC – Miss Bu – at Yaoguang Shoal will give you 3 Starconches the first time you talk to her.

You can also find Starconch throughout the Guyun Stone Forest islands. This may be a preferable farming area due to the abundance of Magical Crystal Chunks and the presence of the Geo Hypostasis. If you need to farm either the Archaic Petra or Retracing Bolide Artifact sets, you can always start at the Domain and end with the Hypostasis.

Finally, Bolai from the Wanyou Boutique sells 5 Starconches for 1,000 Mora each – a total of 5,000 Mora for all 5. His stock refreshes every 3 days. You can find Bolai in the lower section of Liyue Harbor’s wharf.

Common Boss: Ruin Serpent

Located in the Serpent’s Cave in the Chasm, the Ruin Serpent drops the Runic Fang Ascension Material. You will need the Lumenstone Adjuvant equipped to destroy the Ruin Serpent’s Oozing Concretions. This will also prevent your characters from taking damage from Oozing Concretions and the dark mud that the Ruin Serpent creates during the battle.

Gemstone: Varunada Lazurite

The Ruin Serpent only drops the Prithiva Topaz gems, so you will need to fight another Normal Boss to get Varunada Lazurite. Four other bosses drop Varunada Lazurite: the Aeonblight Drake, the Hydro Hypostasis, the Primo Geovishap, and the Rhodeia of Loch (better known as the Oceanid).

Both the Aeonblight Drake and the Primo Geovishap have a chance to drop other gem series. Unless you need materials from either of these two bosses for other characters, focus your efforts on the Hydro Hypostasis or Rhodeia of Loch.

Common Drop: Insignia Series

Finally, Yelan uses Insignia drops from Fatui enemies. All Fatui enemies will drop some version of the Insignia, including the Cincinnati Mages and Pyro Agent. If you need the Mist Grass or Sacrificial Knife series, use your Adventurer Handbook to mark the enemy spawn points on your map.
