Preparing For Entry [SWAT 4]
Doors are a big deal in Modern Warfare, but SWAT 4 makes doors into literal death traps. Doors are your worst nightmare. A door is just another method some crazy criminal can flank you — and managing doors is one of the most important aspects of the randomly-generated missions of SWAT 4. Each time you retry a mission, the layout will change — goons with guns will be in different spots, and your job is to arrest them. Not kill them. That makes everything so much harder in video game terms.
To deal with doors, you’ll have fiber-wire cameras to spy on anything on the other side. Getting information is incredibly important to plan your next move. You can use a boot mechanism to lock doors in place forever, stopping potential flanking attacks while you’re dealing with terrorists. Or you can plant a charge to blast open doors, shocking anyone inside! Ordering your team of SWAT guys around, you can stack up against multiple doors on the fly to initiate a breach with different types of grenades. And locked doors? You can even pick them quietly.
A Mysterious Door [Undertale]
Sometimes doors in video games don’t have to do anything. Doors are gateways to new areas — they’re roadblocks to new possibilities, and a locked door implies that there’s a way to open it. Early in Undertale, players can find a spooky locked door outside the town of Snowdin, marked with a meaningful symbol and unique flowers that look just like Xs and Os. Undertale is packed with little secrets, so players ravenously explored ways to open this dang door.
Youtube channels were founded. Theories were crafted. Fanfiction was written. There’s a Mystery Key you can purchase later in the game, but it doesn’t unlock the Mysterious Door. To get this particular door open, you need to dodge all the Kickstarter backer names that appear in the playable credits of the True Good Ending. When you replay the game, the door will be open. Players were drooling to see what lore awaited them. Maybe a tease for a future game?
Nope. It’s just the Annoying Dog — a joke character that appears all over Undertale media that represents the game’s creator. The Annoying Dog doesn’t really do anything. It’s just a silly Easter egg room. But who doesn’t love a good mystery?
