10 Best Doors In Video Games | When Door Mechanics Matter Most

March 11, 2021 by Kevin Thielenhaus

We’ve got a lot to say about doors in video games.

Battle Royale’s Deep Door Psychology [Apex Legends]

Doors are a psychological weapon in the Battle Royale genre. While you’re looting areas for gear, you’ll have to make a simple choice — do I leave the doors open, or close them? A closed door helps establish the illusion that an area hasn’t been picked through yet. An open door suggests an area has been cleared, and that (maybe) nobody is around anymore. You can leave a door open to lure enemies into a trap, or close doors and use the sound of opening doors to alert you to intruders.

Apex Legends is a prime example of Battle Royale door tactics. And Apex Legends, with its many area-denial and area-control abilities, makes using doors as funnel points even more important to earning those coveted last man standing rewards. Holding onto territory with super abilities or out-maneuvering your enemies is critical as the safe zone shrinks. Using doors to defeat your opponents is an art form unto itself.

The Scariest Door [PT]

Ever since the original Resident Evil, doors have been used to score easy dread points on players. Entering a door might just lead you directly into the chomping jaws of a zombie. Probably the most memorable use of doors in a modern horror game comes from PT — an unreleased horror project from Hideo Kojima and Konami that was (at one point) meant to introduce the world to Silent Hills.

The game never released, making PT even more mysterious. In this terrifying little demo, players walk an infinitely repeating hallway. Using the door, you transition from one loop to the next. Along the way, there’s a single door that actually opens — a bathroom door. When that door creaks open that first time, you’re paralyzed with fear. Lisa, that ghost that haunts the hallway is waiting right behind it. And later when you actually get inside, you’ll find even stranger sights and sounds. Who would’ve guessed there’d be a twisted monster fetus discarded in the sink? That’s why PT gets the award for creepiest door.
