There are all kinds of great free to play video game titles although when you start looking for smaller specific genres, you might come up a bit short on just what all may be available. Still, there are plenty of games to pick from if you do a bit of digging. For instance, those that want some great survival games that are free for the PC platform should check out this list below. We tried to keep it from being flooded with just battle royale games, but you still may find some great titles to enjoy. No list is definitive as they are all opinionated, so we would love to hear some of your favorite survival games by leaving a comment down below.
Unfortunate Spacemen
Unfortunate Spacemen is a relatively new video game that came out back in June of 2020. This is a free-to-play MMO that offers a rather diverse set of game modes for players to enjoy but all of them are action-oriented with a focus of being an FPS. In this game, players are thrown into the future where going to different alien planets is just another daily routine job. However, there are certainly quite a few different hostilities that you may have to overcome and that’s where players step into a role of being, well as the name suggests, an unfortunate spacemen.
This game doesn’t have a big influence over survival elements so don’t go in expecting too much in the genre. Still, there are areas to make note of such as health and oxygen. Being in space, there could be areas that’s toxic or just lacks oxygen in general and that means monitoring your vital sign levels. As mentioned, there are a few different game modes for players to try out.
For instance, you have the standard story mode where you can play either solo or with a few friends. Here you’ll get a variety of tasks to complete and from there it’s a battle to fight off a slew of alien monsters that swarm the area. With that said, you may find more of an interest in the Shapeshifter Mode. This is a game mode that features 16 players and among one of you is an alien that shapeshifts into looking like normal spacemen. From there the paranoia can kick in as you all try to complete objects to escape but are not necessarily sure just who among you is the alien.
Darwin Project
There’s a constant influx of battle royale games being tossed into the market and not every game is a hit. In fact, Darwin Project is a game that sounds great but just didn’t quite get the massive crowds developers, Scavengers Studio, was hoping for. Instead, this game is slowly losing support with the title no longer receiving any future developments but will continue to be playable for at least until the end of this year. Perhaps, if more players show interest in the game, it could sway the developers to provide a bit more support.
Still, Darwin Project may be a title worth checking into. This game is based around an experiment along with a show. Overall, the title features 10 prisoners who must duke it out to stay alive. Scattered across an open world, the players are given very little resources such as an ax along with a bow and arrow setup. From there, it’s up to the players to scavenge for goods and stay alive.
With no guns, the weapons are based around melee combat with an ax or firing a bow and arrow in hopes of making a successful shot. Still, the combat holds on a bit longer than a traditional battle royale game where players are likely to get eliminated in a matter of seconds. Meanwhile, during this action, a separate player takes the role of a Show Director where they can make some altering changes to the game in order to keep things a bit more interesting for the viewers along with the players.
As indicated by the title, this does have some survival elements to it, although nothing very complex. Really, the game has players focusing around the character’s temperature setting. If you start to drop too far down due to the character being cold, you’ll find your HP bar depleting. In order to ensure your character is warm, you’ll have to set up some fires.
Ring of Elysium
Ring of Elysium is another battle royale game but one that’s actually pretty popular and has a strong following. This is a third-person shooter where players are overall, dropped into a big open-world map. With a life-threatening storm brewing, the focus is to reach an evacuation point, but the helicopter is limited to just a few seats which means it’s going to be a fierce battle to get a spot. There are a plethora of hopeful survivors out there scavenging for resources and attempting to carefully reach the evacuation point, this means you’ll need to keep a clear line of sight all around the map as you press on. Keeping close to woods or buildings is likely your best way of moving as you never know who may be setting up a spot to snipe a few hopefuls rushing across the map.
There’s of course plenty of equipment to further keep players warm and healthy. However, this is still very much an FPS game which means gunning down your opponents. Outside of just simply healing and shooting away, there are several strategies to make use of. Knowing the map can be crucial in order to know where to watch out for, gathering supply drops if possible, and of course a wide range of vehicles. Vehicles can be a godsend or a disaster too. While they can allow players to quickly zip around the map, they can also bring a ton of noise, causing players to know where your location is.
Fallout Shelter
Fallout is a massive franchise and we all know it for the big open-world RPG series. However, it’s recently held some different game spin-offs. We had Fallout 76 an MMO version of Fallout and even a mobile title that has since spread to other platforms called Fallout Shelter. This game puts players into the role of a Vault Overseer and features a pretty simplistic gameplay as you’re mainly managing the vault with different inhabitants.
As you progress, you’ll unlock new builds to further expand your vault and even allow more inhabitants to join in. However, there are still quite a few hostile enemies that can break in. Because of the constant outside threat, you’ll need to manage your inhabitants to successfully defend the vault in case of a break-in. Likewise, you may want to give a few characters a better loadout that will allow them to venture out of the Vault for resources.
As the Overseer, you’ll also have to make note of the different resources that are powering your Vault. This means having enough food, water, and power for your Vault to not only run but keep the inhabitants healthy.
