10 Ridiculous Video Game Cliff-Hangers That Never Got Resolved

August 4, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Relive the despair of gaming’s most ridiculous cliff-hangers.

Still Stuck On The Moon [Mega Man Legends 2]

This is an all-timer in the hollowed halls of video game cliff-hangers. This is the original ending that made us yell “What?! That’s it?” Halo 2 might’ve had a more disappointingly abrupt ending, but that game was always going to get a sequel. Even Rage, another game that simply stopped mid-action got a sequel! Mega Man Legends 2 never got a follow-up, and fans have been begging for decades now.

At the end of Mega Man Legends 2, our hero travels to a planetoid orbiting Terra called Elysium. Up in this empty paradise, you’ll do battle with Mother — it’s all part of the surprisingly in-depth story. The only problem? After completing your objectives on Elysium, Mega Man is still stuck up there with no way to return home! That’s a huge bummer, and one we were all hoping would get resolved in the cancelled Mega Man Legends 3.

Eli Vance’s Death [Half-Life 2: Episode 2]

We all know about Eli Vance’s sudden death at the end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. The beloved father figure was a constant source of warmth and comfort in a very unfriendly world, and taking him away considerably raised the stakes on Gordon Freeman’s war against the alien Combine. For the longest time, it seemed like we would never get any resolution to this story, due to Valve’s complete refusal to develop a sequel.

All the other endings on our list have no resolution whatsoever. But there’s a semi-resolution to this cliff-hanger found in Half-Life: Alyx, the VR-only spin-off that was not developed by Valve. If you don’t want to get spoiled on this very recent game, stop reading now!

At the end of Half-Life: Alyx, Alyx Vance meets up with the G-Man. He offers her one wish — and she changes the ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. She saves her father, but is placed under control of the G-Man as payment. What does it mean? Is this even canon? Or is this just 100% confirmation we’ll never get a Half-Life 2: Episode 3? This only makes things more confusing!

Got your own favorite completely unresolved cliff-hangers? Disappointed that games like Bionic Commando and the girlfriend-arm didn’t get a mention? Let us know what you think!
