Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – 10 Tips For The First 10 Hours | Beginner’s Guide

January 17, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

We shouted and kamehameha’d our way through the first 10 hours of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and here are 10 tips you really need to know.

#6: Don’t Forget To Equip Your Know-How!

Using the Skill Tree, you can unlock special passive upgrades called ‘Know-How’, but they don’t apply automatically. It took way too long for me to realize I was unlocking Know-How, but I wasn’t getting any of the benefits! Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Access the Skill Palette with [X / Square] — from there, press [LB / L1 or RB / R1] to check your Know-How. These are passive skills that you have to manually equip. You’ll only have three slots at the start. You’ll unlock more slots later as you level up — basically, don’t waste your Z-Orbs on too many passive skills. When you can only equip three at first, any others will just go to waste.

#7: Looking For Collectibles? Purchase Maps For All The Locations

If you don’t want to waste time searching for collectibles, meats, and other items on the map — you can visit towns in each region and purchase maps for all the collectible spots — Fishing, Hunting, Fruit Trees, and Mineral Deposits. They cost 10,000-12,500 Zeni each. Other NPCs in areas will sell you collectible maps too.

  • NOTE: Look for birds flying in circles above rivers! That’s your sign that an item is below the surface.

For example, you can get a Memorial Spot location in the East Ravine area. Look for the witch Baba! She’s located in Olive Village, and she sells each Memorial Spot location for 1,000 Zeni — Baba the Witch is found on every region map, and she’ll sell you one Memorial Spot per 1,000 Zeni. If you’ve got cash to waste, this is an easy way to track down any missing collectibles.

#8: Eating Food Gives You Permanent Upgrades

Food isn’t just good for a temporary stat bonus — whatever character eats a meal will earn a permanent boost. Usually it’s something small in the early stages of the game, but those upgrades stack.

Purchase food at any NPC vendor, or just cook up amazing meals yourself — they’ll upgrade your characters a ton in the long run. Dinosaur meat is especially good, so don’t miss hunting those giant dinos roaming around.

#9: D Medals Are Rare Items Worth Searching For

To earn new Skills, you’ll need to collect D Medals. These rare items can be found all over the game — by completing missions, side-stories, or just by searching around the environment. They’re absolutely required if you want to unlock new Skills. D Medals are the currency you’ll exchange at Training areas. Spend those D Medals, and you’ll enter a brawl with a friendly rival.

If you manage to win, you’ll learn a new skill. Anything new is worth the effort, and if you’re low on D Medals, just search inside caves and use your special vision mode to spot items on the ground.

#10: Whenever You Can, Complete Phantom Airways & Timed Z-Orbs

Rare Z-Orbs are one of the most valuable currencies you can collect in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. They’re crazy-valuable from the start for a simple reason — rainbow Z-Orbs are required to unlock the most powerful abilities in the game. At the bottom of the Skill Tree, you’ll find rare Z-Orb requirements; 9 orbs, then 15 orbs, then 30 orbs.

They’re always rare, and you can start collecting them right away. You’ll find several by entering Phantom Airways — golden-colored circles in the sky that appear in random spots on each map. These respawn every time you leave and re-enter, so it’s possible to farm them endlessly. Look out for special Time Z-Orbs too, you’ll get a few rainbow Z-Orbs from each pass!

That’s all the tips and tricks I wish I knew before Ki Blasting my way through Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. There’s a whole lot more to learn in this massive game, so stick with us on Gameranx as we provide even more guides.
