Pokémon Sword & Shield: How To Change Your Pokémon’s Natures | New Features Guide

November 27, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Use this new Pokemon Sword & Shield feature to change how your Pokemon improves.

Pokemon Sword & Shield adds something totally new to the main series — you can finally change the nature of your Pokemon pals. If you’re not a hardcore Pokémon player, you might not even understand what a nature is, or how it effects your Pokemon stats. I know I didn’t have a clue what those little ‘nature’ titles meant. They effect your Pokémon’s stats, and depending on which nature you have, your stats will increase at better rates.

It used to be that you were stuck with your Pokémon’s nature, and not every nature is equal. Some Pokemon are better with certain natures — a Brave Pokemon will increase Attack faster, but Speed increases at a much slower rate. Every nature has a weakness and strength. Now you can finally change your natures on-the-fly with an end-game feature. There are 21 different natures — here, I’ll explain how to change them, and what each Nature actually does.

How To Change Your Pokémon’s Natures | New Features Guide

Pokemon, when captured, will have 1 of 21 different Natures. Each Nature changes the rate a Pokémon’s main stats increase as you battle. Natures has one strength and one weakness. One stat will increase faster than others, while another will increase slower. Changing your nature means you can further customize your Pokemon and maximize the stats you need.

How To Change Nature: Natures can be changed with special items called Mints. Mints are sold at Battle Tower — by feeding your Pokemon a Nature Mint, you’ll change their stat buffs to match the corresponding mint.

  • All Nature Mints cost 50 BP each at the Battle Tower vendor.

Using Nature Mints changes the stat buffs to the matching nature, but does not change the displayed Nature on your Pokemon — and the displayed Nature will be passed on to any Pokemon you breed. That’s the major drawback. Here’s a quick rundown of all 21 Natures and what they do so you can decide which Natures you want, and which Natures to skip.
