Outlast 2: Play Recordings Backwards For Secret Audio | Easter Egg Guide

April 26, 2017 by Kevin Thielenhaus

All the distorted audio logs from the school footage collectibles can be played backwards. Check out the hidden messages here.

There’s no room for fun Easter eggs in the grim, fetid cult compounds of Outlast 2. No — this game is all about giving you the heebie-jeebies, and their chosen Satanic method is totally obvious in hindsight.

If you’ve played Outlast 2 at all, you’ll quickly encounter a dream-like school environment. Recording anything in this area results in static on your camera — along with unintelligible nonsense audio. Well, there’s actually a message in that audio. How to hear it? Just play it backwards, of course!

Playing records backwards is a tried-and-true method for finding Satanic secrets in pop culture, so it shouldn’t be a surprise. Still, it totally is, and these hidden messages offer up a handful of answers for the curious.

Secret Messages Played Backwards | Easter Egg

[WARNING: Major story spoilers ahead! Continue reading at your own risk.]

Typically, each visit to the nightmare school in Outlast 2 features one video footage recording collectible. This occurs when you’re pointing your camera at something notable — a red circle will appear and fill. Complete the circle to save a short clip to your camera’s recordings database.

Unlike other recordings, any taken during the school sequences result in static and garbled audio. The audio can be translated; just play it backwards!

As demonstrated in the video above, reversing the audio on the school recordings results in a message. Some of the audio is still pretty hard to make-out, but here are some of the choice quotes pulled from this very-helpful video. These notes absolutely constitute a major spoiler, while also explaining some of the unexplained backstory.

“Deer Lord, sweet Jesus, forgive my sins and accept my gratitude. Thank you God, for killing the child.”

“You remove the temptation and the armor of the flesh [Unknown] was able to resist.”

“I’m weak, but you are strong for me. How generous, you gave me life, you gave me talent.”

“The gift of music, and mathematics, and love. Those fleeting moments, music and love become the same thing.”

“You let me share my bliss with the children, who may be able to take my bigger talents and turn them into glory.”

“Let me share in their wanted path to adulthood. Moments when a child learns those things everybody else already knows, but doesn’t talk about.”

“She was so ripe with possibility. So resilient, smiley, flirty. Never even aware of the power she had.”

“You killed her. You saw what she was. [Unknown] rested on her shoulders as much as on my own. You took her and I could not.”

“You killed her, but I never told a soul. I kept your secret, our secret. Thank you. Thank you. Never told a soul. [Unknown] of her suicide wash over [Unknown] accepted the tragedy of her murder.”

Pretty dark stuff. Enjoy even more gross, disgusting and depressing stories in Outlast 2. Check out our impressions to see what we thought.
