Nintendo Made Bayonetta 2 Possible

September 24, 2012 by Jeanine Celestin-Greer

Without Nintendo, Bayonetta 2 wouldn’t be existing anytime soon

While fans were understandably shocked when the Bayonetta sequel was announced to come to Nintendo's formerly family-friendly console line, it turns out Nintendo's the only reason it's even in development.

"Would Bayonetta 2 not exist without Nintendo? The answer is yes," says Atsushi Inaba, executive director at Platinum Games, talking to Polygon at the Tokyo Game Show.

Inaba says they're not selling out though. Sega was the publisher but has since reduced how many games it publishes. And back in April we learned that Bayonetta 2 didn't make the cut. "We are not viewing this as a change of platform. We were looking for a partner to create Bayonetta 2 and Nintendo was a strong, cooperative partner that was willing to create and grow Bayonetta 2 together [with us]. As a result the platform became the Wii U."

Don't worry about the gameplay Inaba said. It won't be changed because they create the basics of the game on the PC, and they've already developed their own engine to work with multiple platforms. But the Wii U's unique platform brings an interesting challenge.

"Because of the Wii U GamePad, we are putting extra thought into how to use these differentiating features," Inaba said. "There's a difference in the game design side, but we are enjoying the challenges of creating games for new hardware.

You can check out the trailer that was shown at TGS below. "All of the new things you see in the trailer, we can't talk about at all at this point," said Inaba. "We're leaving it up to your imagination."
