Vlambeer has recently released the indie darling Super Crate Box on Steam – and get this, it's free. Meaning: there's no reason you shouldn't at least try it. It's the most agreeable price there is!
Basically, the premise is that you have to get as many crates as possible before death, which sounds simple. The complications are with the fact that your weapon changes with every crate, and naturally not all weapons are as useful as others. And there's enemies, too. Cute enemies, but enemies nonetheless.
It's a very arcadey game where the main motivator is attaining a high score. The retro art and chiptune soundtrack, in conjunction with the addicting gameplay, make this a contender for classic PC title….though those who want to play on the go can, as it's also available on iOS. That's not for free though, so I'd pick the PC version over the iOS one.
And if you're not sold, still–the game got much praise from outlets like EDGE. Not an easy thing to do! So what are you waiting for?
I for one am a huge fan of the growing trend of releasing Great Games for free. It's a good time to be a budget gamer, especially so with Steam's push to include both budget and F2P titles. Here's hoping we see more titles like Super Crate Box released.
