Kickstarter for Oculus Rift Looks Awesome, Needs to Be Funded

August 1, 2012 by Alex Co

Remember those Virtual Reality headsets we saw in the early 90s? Oculus Rift aims to make that a reality.

While I normally don't write about Kickstarters, Oculus Rift is not your typical gaming Kickstarter. Yes, it's asking for your monetary support, but it's certainly something much, much cooler than a game.

Do you remember those Virtual Reality headsets that were all the rage in the 90s? Oculus Rift is aiming to be just that, minus the hokiness.

Its Kickstarter page lists the Oculus Rift as:

Oculus Rift is a new virtual reality (VR) headset designed specifically for video games that will change the way you think about gaming forever. With an incredibly wide field of view, high resolution display, and ultra-low latency head tracking, the Rift provides a truly immersive experience that allows you to step inside your favorite game and explore new worlds like never before.

They're now trying to raise enough money on Kickstarter to build development kits for the Rift. In doing so, this means they will be in the hands of developers faster.

John Carmack, legendary game designer over at id Software (DOOM, Quake) states, "What I've got now, is, I honestly think the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen."

Not only Carmack, other respected gaming figures such as Gears of War director Cliff Bleszinksi and Valve president Gabe Newell speaks highly of the project.

If you do decide to pledge money to it and it's over $300, you'll receive an "Early Rift Developer Kit + DOOM 3 BFG," which the site states "is perfect for the established or indie game developer interested in working with the Rift immediately." This also includes full access to their Developer Center for their Software Development Kits (SDK), docs, samples and engine integrations.

Do you think this is the future of gaming? Would you want next-gen consoles to make use of this?
