We now have a third source for Grand Theft Auto 6 coming to Nintendo Switch 2 – but now our sources are also telling us it might not actually happen? What’s going on here?
Nate Throws His Hate Into The Ring
NateTheHate shared this statement on Twitter:
I said a while ago that R* was doing tests to bring it to Switch 2; but tests don’t always equal release. I know an effort has been made to see if they can bring it to the platform. I don’t know the current state of that effort.
Nate then saw someone else share this as a new rumor that the game was coming to the new console. He gave this reply, to debunk that claim:
Experimenting doesn’t equal “in development” & companies often test to see if a game is possible on hardware.
Kiwi Talkz About What He Knows
Reece Reilly, AKA Kiwi Talkz, chimed in on this as well. He replied to another report about this rumor on Twitter himself. Reilly said this:
NateTheHate saying Rockstar tested GTA 6 on Switch 2 doesnt mean anything, Rockstar tested putting GTA V on Wii U and that went nowhere.
Devs test putting games on hardware all the time, don’t take it as confirmation that it is happening.
MercurySteam tested Samus Returns on Switch and that led to nothing, so don’t look for hope where there is none.
He also shared this followup:
I am saying its not confirmation that it WILL happen.
They tested GTA V for Wii U (it didnt come out)
They tested RDR2 for Switch 1 (it didnt come out)
So Rockstar doing a test doesnt mean it will become a thing, all it means is they tested it.
GTA 6 wont run on Switch 2 without serious, serious compromises.
Why Are They Taking Back These Rumors Now?
We made sure to check and confirmed that we reported on Kiwi Talkz talking about this rumor twice, and the rumor from Nash Weedle earlier today. We can’t trace when Nate originally made this claim but he just confirmed it again today.
Nate and Reece seemed comfortable enough to share that the game is being tested on the Switch 2. That means that they got trusted sources telling them the same thing. They probably got a few people to confirm it, too.
But they can’t confirm the game is coming, because they’re not the developers making the port. They can’t predict what the game studio or publisher will decide.
There are obviously a lot of reasons that this port may not eventually get made. It’s not just about power – Take-Two may decide it’s not worth the effort if they won’t make enough money to justify it.
Subsequently, Rockstar may choose to offer other games that will sell better with Nintendo users. If I could be so bold, Rockstar and Nintendo could absolutely team up for a dream project, such as a reimagining of Body Harvest exclusive to the Switch 2.
In any case, it’s gratifying that Rockstar is now considering Nintendo as a platform worth bringing their games to. It shows how much Nintendo has changed.
It could really point to another huge change in the industry, thanks not only to Nvidia’s powerful technology, but Nintendo’s new openness with third parties.
