We now have a second source claiming that Grand Theft Auto 6 is now in development for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Where Did The Grand Theft Auto 6 Nintendo Switch 2 Rumor Come From?

It was Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly who introduced the rumor last September that Nintendo would be negotiating with Rockstar to get Grand Theft Auto 6 on the Switch 2.

This month, he then claimed that Take-Two is getting jitters about Xbox’s future as a games console. That was the reason they are looking into bringing the game to Nintendo’s console.

But Reilly didn’t go as far as our second source, Nash Weedle.

Nash Weedle Confirms Grand Theft Auto 6 For The Switch 2

Weedle made this tweet earlier today (Translated via DeepL) :

LEAK EXPRESS: I can CONFIRM that a port of GTA VI for SWITCH 2 is in the works.

I hadn’t said much about it before, as I had to be cautious until now, but I can also comment that:

-The game’s delay is not due to this version.

-It looks like it won’t be released at launch.

Do We Really Think Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Run On The Switch 2?

There were fans speculating if the Nintendo Switch 2 rumor could run Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto 6 as early as last year.

This was part of a broader conversation about the Switch 2’s capabilities, because leaks were coming out about the console’s components. Fans were freely discussing the platform’s potential performance.

Today we have a better idea of what the Switch 2 can do. In a weird way, we have more grounded expectations of the console’s capabilities. At the same time, we now know it can do more than most gamers expected.

Even the performance testers were proven wrong, but that’s because they could not predict Nvidia’s ability to scale their technology to accommodate Nintendo. And that’s where this conversation comes in.

Has The Balance Of Power Changed For Rockstar Games And Nintendo?

Your gamer dads will remember when Rockstar North, before they were called Rockstar North, were frustrated about making games for Nintendo. Their Nintendo 64 titles Body Harvest and Space Station Silicon Valley were technical showcases for that console’s capabilities.

But a disconnect between the studio, then called DMA Design, and Nintendo, then headed by the likes of Minoru Arakawa and Hiroshi Yamauchi, was too wide to make it work. Those games did not sell well, and DMA/Rockstar North would find its breakout success with PlayStation instead.

Today, the bosses in charge at Take-Two and Nintendo are Strauss Zelnick and Shuntaro Furukawa. And their current partnership currently has one foul ball (Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition) and one home run (Red Dead Redemption).

Analysts were calling Grand Theft Auto 6 and the Switch 2 the two products that would ‘save’ the industry in 2024. Even if it happens a year or two after its original launch, these two industry titans coming together is potentially a game changer. It could be as big as the original timed exclusivity deal for Grand Theft Auto III on the PlayStation 2 two decades ago.
