Take-Two Removes Messages From Rockstar Website, FKA Rockstar Social Club

September 16, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

It could or could not have something to do with Grand Theft Auto 6.

Take-Two has made a big (or small?) change on their website.

Tez2 shared the news on Twitter today:

As of yesterday, Rockstar Games has discontinued the messaging feature on their website/Social Club. In-game messaging is unaffected.

Tez2 also linked to the Rockstar Games support page, which says this:

As of September 15, 2025, the Messages feature is no longer available on the Rockstar Games website.

In-game messaging features are not impacted by this change.

What Was This Rockstar Social Club Again?

We can understand if you didn’t quite understand what this news is. That’s because Take-Two made changes on their website a few years ago.

The Rockstar Games website was originally more than a conventional video game company website. It was actually branded as the Rockstar Social Club.

When it was still the Rockstar Social Club, the site had integrated features to your Rockstar account and their games. As the name implied, Rockstar made the website a community space of sorts for their loyal players.

The Original Vision For Rockstar Social Club

It seems the peak for Rockstar Social Club was Grand Theft Auto IV. They had leaderboards but also dedicated sections for specific records of different kinds.

So, there are different sections on the website for Grand Theft Auto IV players’ crime reports, how much GTA $ they made, how quickly they completed the game, etc.

There was even Social Club TV, Rockstar’s own little version of YouTube. This was a website owned by Rockstar and Take-Two, where players can upload their own game footage for everyone to see.

These features were limited, but it’s clear that Rockstar were hoping to expand it further. And maybe we didn’t realize that Rockstar did just that.

Did Rockstar Just Switch From Rockstar Social Club To Grand Theft Auto Online?

We’re sure a lot of players enjoyed using Rockstar Social Club. Obviously, that paled in comparison with how many players enjoyed playing and spending on Grand Theft Auto Online.

And with Grand Theft Auto Online becoming a console generational success, Rockstar didn’t have to keep Rockstar Social Club anymore.

It seems that Rockstar allowed their messages feature to stick around while they phased out Rockstar Social Club itself.

What may surprise you is that Rockstar Social Club was phased out just this 2023. We suspect that they could have phased it out even earlier, but the web services they paid for may have been paid for this whole time.

In any case, you haven’t seen fans complain about losing this feature. That’s a clear sign the Grand Theft Auto gamers stopped using it already.

Does It Have Anything To Do With Grand Theft Auto 6?

We don’t think that Rockstar HAD to remove the Rockstar website’s messages to launch Grand Theft Auto 6. But we do think that their focus is shifting to their next game.

Last week, Tez2 also noticed that Rockstar changed how text messaging works in Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced Editions’ Grand Theft Auto Online.

It’s easy to imagine Rockstar building robust support and features for Grand Theft Auto Online for Grand Theft Auto 6. They registered some web domains for parody websites last week too.

Suffice to say, Rockstar might have some genuine surprises for us this coming May 2026.
