Sony Online Entertainment has just released a new batch of screenshots from Planetside 2 to celebrate the game's showing at GDC 2012. The screens showcase some of the game's weapons and vehicles, as well as they enormous battles they'll all take part in.
Impressive though they are, a few still images don't easily convey the incredible scale SOE has brought to Planetside 2, so keep one thing in mind: every vehicle and soldier you see in these screens is being controlled by a real person, and scenes like this are playing out countless times across giant maps in a single, ludicrously large battle.
With individual matches involving hundreds of soldiers and continents that span 64 square kilometers — that's nearly twice the size of Skyrim, for comparison — the game is certainly commited to putting the "massive" back into "massively mutliplayer." Throw in a persistent terroritorial control metagame, in which three factions duke it out for control over the entire planet, and you've got one of the most ambitious games since, well, the first Planetside.
The PC-exclusive Planetside 2 has yet to be dated, but SOE will be announcing details on the game's closed beta soon, with those who played the original Planetside being given top priority.
