Tired of traveling alone or with only a single companion by your side? This new mod, which doesn’t require any hacks or console commands, allows you to have Dogmeat and another pal around at the same time.
According to its creator, Valdacil, there is a lot of evidence within the Fallout 4 code to indicate that Dogmeat was never designed as a true companion like Preston Garvey, Piper Wright, Nick Valentine or any of the others. In fact, the developers at Bethesda had originally intended for you to have Dogmeat along with another companion.
Evidence for this can be found in the game’s script from a Bethesda developer, which reads:
;Originally there were two slots for companion types, you could have both Dogmeat and a single human companion.
;That is why there are two aliases and two seperate functions.
;Now we are only letting you have either dogmeat or a single human companions.
;Rather than risk breaking everything by trying to unifying everything into a single alias/function call
;I am going to just put hooks in SetCompanion and SetDogmeatCompanion to auto dismiss the other
In addition, Live and Love magazines don’t work for Dogmeat, nor does his presence disable the Lone Wanderer perk benefits. Dogmeat has reduced carry capacity and lower DPS compared to any other character. One could argue of course that having the Lone Wanderer perk benefits balances out his shortcomings, but it should also be noted that other companions have affinity interactions for healing Dogmeat, which would require two companions to be present in your party at the same time.
Several other mods have attempted to buff Dogmeat’s stats or “fix” him into becoming a true companion. Instead of doing that, this new mod simply reenables the original functionality of Dogmeat as a secondary companion.
Keep in mind that you shouldn’t use the mod with other companion mods or any mods that edit companion dialog relatd to picking them up.
You can download the mod directly from Bethesda’s official mod platform. If you have trouble with that version, get it off the Nexus.
