Absolutely No Plans For PlayStation First-Party Games To Release Day One For PS Plus Subscribers

June 25, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Sony won’t follow a Game Pass service model.

PlayStation Plus offers a notable deal for subscribers. There are three tiers available, so you can find that sweet spot for what you’re personally after. Of course, all tiers offer subscribers a selection of games to enjoy at their leisure each month. For those on PlayStation Plus Extra, you’re also given access to the PS Plus Game Catalog, a large collection of titles for players. However, it’s not the same deal as Xbox and their Game Pass service.

With Microsoft, they take a drastically different approach to their Game Pass service. Similar to the PS Plus Game Catalog, players are given access to both first-party and third-party games. The big difference between the two is that Microsoft offers their first-party games on the service at launch. So, no matter if you’re enjoying Game Pass through the cloud, PC, or console, you’ll have access to the latest big AAA games from the various Xbox first-party studios.

Sony doesn’t offer this deal, and they are not changing their plans to mimic a similar setup. Recently, Game File spoke with PlayStation’s VP of global services, Nick Maguire. During their conversation, the topic of adding Sony’s big blockbuster releases at launch for PlayStation Plus subscribers came up, but Nick was quick to shoot the idea down.

We’ve sort of stayed true to our strategy across the board, where we’re not looking to put games in day and date. Our strategy of finding four or five independent day-and-date titles—and using that to complement our strategy of bringing games in when they’re 12, 18 months old or older—that balance for us is working really well across the platform.

So it seems like if you were holding out to hope that PlayStation would eventually see some of the big heavy hitter games from Sony’s first-party studios come to the service at launch, then don’t hold your breath. Instead, we’ll see these games come out later on, well after Sony manages to get the most profit possible from consumers. Likewise, some of those games might find their way into the service as a means to push new interest in the franchise if there is a new installment coming out. Meanwhile, in other related news to PlayStation Plus, we have word on what games are heading to the service next month.
